Have just read a review on Courtyard and was a little concerned by reference to area not being one to just go for a stroll after dark. We are due to stay here for a couple of nights end October and will be without a car and intended to perhaps do some shopping in the evenings.
Can anyone with local knowledge please advise re safety, areas to avoid etc
Safety - Courtyard Philadelphia Downtown areaMost stores in town are not open in the evening, especially in the area you will be staying. You can walk to and from the hotel, but it%26#39;s not much of an area for strolling. What kind of shopping had you planned on?
Safety - Courtyard Philadelphia Downtown areaAye, its not so much a safety issue as there isn%26#39;t that much in the immediate area....
As the previous posters commented there really aren%26#39;t any downtown stores open at night in that area. We have suburban shopping malls like the King of Prussia mall open at night but you would need transportation out of town to get to one of them.
Lammy ~
You are a block away from Macy%26#39;s. The store is open until 8:00.
In addition, there is The Gallery Mall. The Gallery is a few blocks south. Some people do feel that the Mall is a bit seedy at night - it is also opened until 8:00. http://www.galleryatmarketeast.com/
On Walnut %26amp; Chesnut Sts you will find an assortment of clothing stores~ Gap, Banana Republic, Ralph Lauren, Urban Outfitters, Antropologie, etc. Most of these stores are usually open until 8:00 %26amp; some do stay open until 9:00 on Fri %26amp; Sat.
I called a few to check.
Gap. Ralph Lauren and UO close at 7PM M-Sa 6PM on Sunday.
Loonbeam is referring to The Gap Outlet ~ which closes at 7:00.
The Gap ( which I was referring to) is open until 8 during the week %26amp; 9 on Fri %26amp; Sat. Urban Outfitters is also opened until 8. As noted, not all of the stores are opened that late ( i.e. Ralph Lauren).
Nope, actually was the Gap itself.. They have changed hours to match the outlet until pre-thanksgiving for holiday sales, at least according to the person i spoke to. Apparently a few stores do that because business is slower between post labor-day and pre-holiday.
Loonbeam ~ I believe you have been misinformed. I was in there last week %26amp; nobody mentioned that the store hours would be changing.
I just called to confirm and I was told that the hours are not changing. Again, open M-Th until 8:00 %26amp; Fri- Sat until 9:00.
Just to clarify, I am referring to the full price store on 15th %26amp; Walnut.
Center City Philadelphia%26#39;s retail sector is limited. Macy%26#39;s is a full-price department store a few blocks from the Courtyard--nice merchandise, but generally not at bargain prices. The Gallery East has stores that are not as nice as Macy%26#39;s, but you may find some real bargains there at Burlington Coat Factory, which has a mix of some nice name-brand merchandise and some more generic merchandise. Also in the Gallery East area you will find a K-Mart, which is a large discount chain where you will find very low prices and quality levels that generally correspond to the prices, but there are always exceptions. I feel safe in this entire area, although there are clearly some poor folks hanging out near the Gallery. You can find some higher-end stores west of Broad Street, with a concentration near Liberty Place, Chestnut Street, and Walnut Street.
