center city scranton

Scranton is definately a nice place on a small city scale. I don%26#39;t know about transportation in Philadelphia, but the public transportation here is not as reliable as in a bigger city. There is an increasingly popular nightlife downtown. There are several ski areas, minor league arena football, baseball, and hockey teams, concert pavillions, malls and movie theaters all within a half hour drive from scranton. Dorney Park in Allentown is about an hour away, and Camel Beach Water Park in the Poconos is about 45 minutes away.

Crime is present in Scranton, but I think it is overall much less visible than in larger metro areas. Parts of the ';Hill Section'; (near the University of Scranton), South Scranton, and parts of West Scranton are a little worse than others.

Conversely, there are several sections that are great neighborhoods. The other part of the Hill Section has great turn of the century houses that are well maintained. The ';Green Ridge'; area is also nice, and there are several developments just on the outskirts of East Scranton and West Scranton.

Hope this was helpful, just ask anything else if you think of it.

center city scranton

Just noticed your post. I%26#39;ve been a Scranton resident all my life so am a bit partial to it, but the previous post did a nice job overviewing. I moved to one of the outskirt areas a few years ago and love my location, which is Roaring Brook Township. Up this way but right outside the city you can also look at Elmhurst, Springbrook, and Moscow...depeding on where you go in each of these areas you are within 15 minutes from downtown which is what I like about it!

Housing right in Scranton is a bit cheaper but though I am from West Side and loved it, I%26#39;ve noticed there is more crime than their used to be in Southside and West Side espically. East Mountain near Lake Scranton is a great location and still within the city. Plus Lake Scranton is a beautiful place to walk, run, take a stroller etc.

On the other side of Scranton there is Clarks Summit which is sometimes more expensive. The mini-mansions are at Glenmaura near Moosic, also on the outskirts.

The downtown has recently been revitilized and there%26#39;s a fair amount to do now, though coming from Philly it doesn%26#39;t compare in that arena. If you have specific questions fell free to ask and I%26#39;ll try to ansewr them...

Do you have kids?

The Scranton area is one of the nicest places to raise kids. Excellent schools, tons of activites, etc. but the nicest part is how safe you feel. The neighborhood here in Clarks Summit still watches all of the kids and I came home today to discover I left my front door unlocked and on more than one occasion have returned to find my garage down open and everything still fine.
