Center City to South Philly

Want to go see Pat%26#39;s and Geno%26#39;s (even if we get Philly C/S somewhere else per this forum) and eat at a ';red gravy'; restaurant. Is subway, bus or taxi best option? Thanks.

We%26#39;re staying near convention center.

I%26#39;m not sure what you mean by a ';red gravy'; restaurant... but concerning Pat%26#39;s and Geno%26#39;s, while mass transit options are very good through most of the city, getting to that intersection is kinda funky. You%26#39;d be better off taking a cab. No need to call ahead as numerous taxis roam Center City, especially near the Convention Center.

Red gravy = Italian

Correct?

Thanks Tony. I%26#39;ve seen the recommendations from local posters of family-owned Italian restaurants that referred to them as ';red gravy'; so thought that common speak. Looks like taxi our best bet.

Near the Convention Center you can take the 23 bus from 12th %26amp; Market south and get off at Federal St and walk 2 blocks east to get there (and take the 23 bus back via 11th St). That would also be your cheapest transportation to the ';red gravy'; restaurants. There%26#39;s been a multitude of suggestions posted here for good Italian dining. You can%26#39;t go wrong with Ralph%26#39;s Italian restaurant

';Red Gravy'; refers to the old style Italian restaurant, such as Villa diRoma as opposed to newer Italian restaurants such as Positano Coast.

Red gravy: Good Italian food (like what Italians eat at home), nothing too fancy, red/white checker tablecloth, velvet picture of Sinatra on the wall.

Speaking of the velvet Sinatra, I really miss the South Philly Grille and have been looking for a replacement since they closed. If any locals know what I%26#39;m talking about, any suggestions?

Don%26#39;t know about Sinatra on the wall : ) but that%26#39;s exactly the kind of place in the posts/recommendations that I%26#39;d seen previously. I didn%26#39;t have the names handy but do now remember both Ralph%26#39;s and Vila di Roma being mentioned. Maybe we can take the bus to the area to look around, have dinner, and take taxi back to hotel.

Want to make best use of our short time there and will be mainly in historic/museum areas but do want to get to South Philly also.

Appreciate all the help and looking forward to our Sept visit.

';Red gravy'; means Southern Italian, tomato-based sauces. There are also traditional Tuscan and Northern Italian restaurants, but they%26#39;re not red gravy and also tend to be more expensive.
