To do in one day

Will arrive in Gettysburg on 8/22 around noon. Staying at the Best Western. Leaving for Baltimore the next day so could see some of Gettysburg that morning.

What is the best way to see the battlefield and general area in that timeframe? What is the one restaurant that is a must? Thanks.

Although that%26#39;s a rather short amount of time in Gettysburg, here are some ideas of what to do, how best to do it, and what not to miss.

#1: Hire a licensed battlefield guide to take you on a tour of the battlefield! You will find all sorts of highly positive references to battlefield guides%26#39; tours on this forum. This is a private tour in your car with your guide, and it costs only around $40-45, a real bargain for a couple hours. You can hire a guide at the national park visitor centre , plus if you explore this forum there are some names of recommended guides. The guide I had was excellent. Contact me direct if you want his info. Otherwise either show up at the visitor centre or make a reservation with the park before you come. There are other ways to do the battlefield but a guide is Definitely the BEST way to see the battlefield, especially if you%26#39;ve time constraints.

#2: The national park visitor centre has a great museum, and it is free. Lots of great exhibits.

#3: The national cemetery. Across the street from the visitor centre, beautiful and moving place where Lincoln did the Gettysburg Address. The rangers have tours there, no cost, a couple times a day; ours was about a half hour or so.

Now all the stuff above would fill a half day. Another spot you might want to consider:

-Shriver house: a Civil War row house on Baltimore street, they give tours of the house which was used as a hospital, and tell you about the civilians of the town and all they went through.

AVOID:

The Lincoln Train Museum (old, tacky)

Halls of Presidents (old, tacky)

Food: There are a few good restaurants in Gettysburg that I have tried, but one that is excellent, has a great ';feel'; about it and great food is the Dobbin House, an old (1700s) stone house. Real nice dining.

OK, I think that should get you started. Hope it helps.

XXrrttyy gave you some wonderful suggestions. For our personal guide, we hired Stuart. We have contact info for him, if you are interested. He made the battlefield come alive and we learned so much. Another thing to do is tour the Eisenhower%26#39;s home. They lived there (part-time) when he was president and after he retired. Tours leave from the battlefield visitor%26#39;s center and can be from 1 1/2 hours to longer. Times vary as part of it is guided and part is explore yourself. Also, in one of the buildings is a small museum which could be done along with the other things in 1 1/2 hours.
