Most famous local food is the Pittsburgh Sandwich from Primanti Brothers - they put fries and cole slaw right on the sandwhich.
While I like fries and slaw, I refuse to eat the slop that Primanti%26#39;s serves.
There are many locations for Primanti Brothers, so you%26#39;ll probably find one close to wherever you are staying.
I prefer hitting places on the South Side like Pittsburgh Steak Company or Piper%26#39;s Pub.
How can you call Primantis ';slop';? They make your sandwich fresh right in front of you at the original location in the Strip District. The ingredients are from the Strip District, as fresh as you can get in Pittsburgh. And because they make so many sandwiches every day, the ingredients never have time to sit for long. It may not be for everyone, but ';slop';? Give me a break. Primantis is the place to go in Pittsburgh for what you are looking for noah. And the prices are very reasonable.
I don%26#39;t care where they get the ingredients.
Anything slapped together that looks like this:

is slop. I refuse to eat there again.

Not necessarily the healthiest or neatest food option, but it looks tasty to me! It is all a matter of personal preference. We%26#39;re not talking about fancy food - it doesn%26#39;t have to look pretty - just taste good, and it does. There is no doubt that it is considered ';The'; Pittsburgh place to eat.
By the way, noah, you asked about ';family friendly';. Primanti%26#39;s is family friendly. Many families make it a Saturday morning ritual to walk around the Strip District, where there are plenty of interesting shops, and go to Primanti%26#39;s for breakfast or lunch. They also have an interesting mural with caricatures of famous Pittsburghers on the wall.

Eat N Park, it%26#39;s a chain but variety is good and so are the prices. When we visit Pittsburgh, my hubby has to have the super burger. I like the variety of the menu and kids are always welcome.
If the kids are older, Dave and Busters (arcade heaven) at the Waterfront (they usually have a deal that if you buy an entree you get a $10 power card-it%26#39;s totally worth it, large portions and free play) OR dine outside at the Hard Rock Cafe at Station square and enjoy the scenery, dancing water display and music.
One more...Danny%26#39;s Hoagies...near South Park. Get an Italian Hoagie, extra cheese and italian dressing....mmmmmm, then take the kids out to South Park to see the animal preserve-free.
I%26#39;m from Pittsburgh and I can%26#39;t stand Primanti%26#39;s, the poster was right about it being slop...my description....2 pieces of greasy, lowest quality meat?, undercooked greasy soggy wilty fries and slightly vinagar slaw on a bun that%26#39;s pretty stale. I have tried different locations and it%26#39;s not worth the time or money.
Enjoy your stay, we just got back yesterday, love the Burgh.
