Looking for food....

Am vacationing in Philly soon and am looking for places to eat.

Me likes:

Italian (old school, not fancy or $$$)

BBQ

Local cuisine (cheese steak, etc.)

Dives

Looking for places with character and good food (mom and pop joints). Not the mini-mall type of corporate crap - got way too much of that here in SoCal.

we%26#39;re staying at the Doubletree on Broad St. and will not have car.

any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Looking for food....

It is a chain, but the Italian at Maggiano%26#39;s near 11th and Market is good, reasonable and filling.

Can%26#39;t help you much on BBQ, the best place I know is in the NE section of the city and would need a car and a map ;)

Local Cuisine - No Car: There%26#39;s a bit of a battle going on lease-wise with Rick%26#39;s Steaks and the Reading Terminal Market, so no one knows if/when he will leave/get kicked out. If you can get to the market and he is still there, make sure to get a steak. The Reading Terminal Market is near the Phila convention center, well within walking distance of the Doubletree, and is a must visit either way (best place in Center City to grab breakfast - the Down Home Diner in there.)

Dives - Well, its not a dive, but the Irish Pub on Rittenhouse Square is a nice place to have a drink.

Looking for food....

Loonbeam,

the Irish Pub is not on Rittenhouse Square, it is a block away on Walnut Street between 20th %26amp; 21st.

kingofchimps,

Cheeseteaks- Jim%26#39;s 4th %26amp; South or Campo%26#39;s 2nd %26amp; Market. Nothing good right nearby the hotel

Sorry, I walk through the square to get there all the time when in the city, so I think of it that way, but you are correct, its a block off.

Italian-

Villa Di Roma on 9th Street in the Italian Market, no credit cards, no reservations

Core di Roma on the 200 block of South Street

Some other small restaurants with character:

Dmitri%26#39;s - 3rd and Catherine, very fresh, simple Mediterranean, particularly fish. No reservations

Ariana - 100 block of Chestnut, Afghan

Sassafras - 2nd Street north of Chestnut, great burgers

Copa Too - 15th near Spruce, great burgers, nachos, and margaritas

Monk%26#39;s - 16th near Spruce, Belgian with awesome beer selection

Reading Terminal Market - numerous vendors under one roof. see readingterminalmarket.org for more info. I%26#39;m a big fan of Dinic%26#39;s roast pork sandwiches.

Lynn

I second Lynn%26#39;s recommendation of Villa di Roma--excellent Italian food! We also enjoyed Ralph%26#39;s which is couple of blocks away from Villa di Roma. Like Villa di Roma, they don%26#39;t take credit cards. McCarthys5 says Mezza Luna has great gnocchi and next time we%26#39;re in town, we%26#39;ll try it!

Hey folks Villa di Roma may be closed for August. I know it was last year as the family headed to Italy on vacation. Ralph%26#39;s was open last year during August.

Another restaurant to consider that is a bit of a dive but an excellent dive, McGillan%26#39;s Pub. It is one of, if not the, oldest Pub in Philly and is located a few blocks from your hotel on Ramstead between Chestnut and Walnut and Juniper and 12th. Great bar food with an old pub atmosphere.

Have fun! Moms

The Black Sheep Irish Pub also has a wonderful ( and inexpensive menu) along with a great selection of beers. Very good crowd too.

Lynn makes great suggestions, and I can also personally second the recommendations for McGillin%26#39;s and The Black Sheep. Another great place is Moriarity%26#39;s at 11th and Walnut. Their buffalo wings are great, as are the burgers. Another old-school Italian favorite of mine is Marra%26#39;s on Passyunk Ave in South Philly. Great pizza and I had some very tasty gnocchi there this past spring (although Mezza Luna is my favorite for gnocchi in South Philly!) My husband had a calzone at Marra%26#39;s with proscuitto and ricotta that was enormous and delicious and could have fed a small army. I also recommend Standard Tap in Northern Liberties for really good gastropub cuisine. I would be about a $5-6 cab ride to get there or a few long walk (I%26#39;ve done it, though.) None of these are fancy food, but really good eats!

And, while I love Reading Terminal Market and consider it a must-do in Philly, skip the mediocre fare at the Down Home Diner. It%26#39;s a tourist trap. Instead, check out The Dutch Eating Place in the Market for great breakfast fare at reasonable prices.
