I%26#39;m attending a conference in Philly in September and I plan to go in the day before (which is a Monday) to just explore, eat good food, have a few good local beers.
I%26#39;m a female and will be traveling alone so I want to be sure I%26#39;m going to safe areas. I%26#39;d like to see at least one great historic site and do some shopping also. Lofty plans I know!!
Any suggstions on the above would be greatly appreciated! My plan is to get a feel for the city and then go back for a weekend with some friends.
Also, advice on using the public transporation. I do plan on doing something on the cheesy side......I%26#39;d like to see the King Tut exhibit at the Franklin. I%26#39;ve heard some so-so reviews but I love Egypt history and I%26#39;m sure I%26#39;ll enjoy it.
Any other suggestions / ideas would be awesome.
Thanks!!
One day in Philly
As long as you are staying in the historic district or museum area, safety is not an issue. Really late at consider a cab.
For a one day itinerary..
AM, get tickets to Independence Hall. Depending on time of tickets, go to constitution center or liberty bell (lines may vary). After the hall, its a short walk to the Reading terminal market for lunch.
From there, its a decent walk or a short cab ride to the Franklin (for timing reasons, I%26#39;d skip public transit on this one). GET YOUR TICKETS IN ADVANCE. The tut exhibit is sold out for a lot of times.
Depending on when you leave the FI, walk back to Market checking out the fountains and city hall on the way.
Dinner at your discretion.
Some of this may vary based on when you can get tickets for tut and where you are based from.
One day in Philly
Thanks so much for all the information.
I%26#39;m not staying a the best of hotels but hoping it will be decent. I%26#39;m at the Holiday Inn Express Midtown.
Thanks again for the help!
What type of shopping would you like to do?
All of the typical clothing stores are located on Walnut Street ~ a very easy walk from The Terminal.
Lot of good Irish Pubs in the immediate vicinity of your hotel (Moriarty%26#39;s, McGillan%26#39;s, Fergies) if you like that sort of thing. Best stores are on Walnut St., on the other side of Broad from your hotel.
Two places that both have great selections of food %26amp; beer ( plus good crowds ~ especially if traveling alone) are Monk%26#39;s %26amp; The Black Sheep.
With only one day of free time, you won%26#39;t have time to fit it in on this trip, but since you like Egyptian things, do check out the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology on the Penn Campus. Web is www.museum.upenn.edu.
Perhaps you can do it on a future visit.
The HE Midtown is at 13th and Walnut, which is about a long 3 block walk to the Reading terminal market and about a 15-20 min walk from the historical %26#39;stuff%26#39; (depending on pace). My only advice might be to walk along Broad street later at night, not because of safety but because of the traffic pattern a lot of businesses, many involving food have their dumpsters on and around 13th ;)
Great tips -- thanks to everyone!
