Hi,
My partner and I (male and female 30-40 years old)are spending a week in Philadelphia ( Oct, 28 - Nov 3) we would like to see and do as much as possible and would like as much info, as possible on places / things to do and see (or not do ! ! !) We are travelling from Liverpool, U.K. and we would be greatful for any help you could offer.
help us enjoy ! ! !
I don%26#39;t know where to begin. Do you want to visit historical sites, museums, shop, all of the above? Where are you staying? What kind of food do you like and price range for dining suggestions?
help us enjoy ! ! !
Our aim is to see as much of Philly as poss, a little bit of everything, suggestions on guided tours to start so that we can get a good overview. re eating, mid range on the price and we are both happy to try a range of food types. I would love to do a little fishing whilst in Philly
Okay then, we can start with the basics.
1%26gt; Do you know where you are staying yet?
2%26gt; As soon as you can after getting into town, take a hop-on hop-off bus tour (www.phillytour.com or your hotel can often arrange.) That will give you a good idea as to where things are.
3%26gt; To give us a baseline for other activities, please click on the Philadelphia Attractions link to the left, read the short descriptions and pick 5-6 that you find most interesting at a glance and let us know, that will help us give some more targetted suggestions. Given you will be there over halloween, I would DEFINATELY check out Eastern State Pen.
4%26gt; As to fishing, thats going to be tough, there isn%26#39;t anywhere in Philly I would send you, so you would need a rental car and a full day. Depending on your plans, I%26#39;m not sure if this is how you might want to spend your time.
Fishing could be done if you plan on renting a car...
You could hit one of the beaches that are an hour away and do an early morning 4 hour charter... that should put you back in Philly just after lunch...
I did a quick chek, a lot of the charters aren%26#39;t operating right then or more limited schedules. Also, I%26#39;m not sure if we are talking deep sea...
There are plenty of charters for hire or morning party boats in the Atlantic City areas, especially for Fall stripers~ The best source is one of the local New Jersey fisherman magazines as opposed to the Internet.
Baz ~ if you are interested, I would be happy to pull some contact info out of these magazines.
Here are some of my suggestions. I grouped places to see and nearby places to eat by location. Just so you know, my dining taste lean toward pubs and casual restaurants.
Old City
Sites: Independence Hall, Liberty Bell, Constitution Center
Eat: Rotten Ralph%26#39;s, Lamberti%26#39;s, Soho Pizza (counter service)
Other: Horse-drawn carriage ride through Old City is always enjoyable and the guide usually provides some interesting information.
Art Museum area
Sites: Philadelphia Museum of Art, Eastern State Prison
Eat: Bishop%26#39;s Collar, London Grill, Bridgid%26#39;s
Other: Stroll along Boathouse Row (weather permitting), Take a break in London Next Store for gourmet coffee and/or ice cream.
University City:
University of Pennsylvania Archaeology and Anthropology Musueum
Eat: New Deck Cafe
Camden Waterfront: Adventure Aquarium, Tour of the USS New Jersey Battleship
Note: Would not wonder from these locations (not very nice beyond the waterfront)
Other museums, depending on interest: Academy of Natural Sciences, Franklin Institute, Mutter Museum
Other places/things to eat, to get a real Philly experience: Reading Terminal Market, just about any Italian restaurant in South Philly, just about any pizza or hoagie shop for a cheesesteak but I would stay away from Pat%26#39;s (over-rated tourist trap).
Other things to do: Philadelphia Zoo (weather permitting), if you%26#39;re a sports fan, maybe take in a Flyers (or a less expensive Phantoms) game, shopping along Walnut St (west of Broad).
