King Tut exhibit at the Franklin Institute

Has anyone been to the exhibit? How is it? Can you recommend a good hotel nearby? Thanks

King Tut exhibit at the Franklin Institute

The reviews have been not so great. The best I%26#39;ve seen was a very unexcited, ';it was interesting';. Visitors have commented that there is nothing ';wow'; about it, and there is no one centerpiece that makes it worthwhile either. The permanent exhibit at the University of Pennsylvania Museum is better. I think it%26#39;s the kind of thing that you could visit if you are visiting Philadelphia, but it%26#39;s not worth the trip on its own.

I usually tell people that if you live within driving distance of Philadelphia and haven%26#39;t been to the franklin institute in a while then it%26#39;s worth it. If you are traveling to Philadelphia for a weekend getaway, there are better things to see and do. Like the previous poster said, there is no %26#39;wow%26#39; factor, and I thought they could have chosen more and better artifacts. I wasn%26#39;t mad when I left and did not feel it was a waste the money, but when I left the last room I thought, %26#39;that was it?%26#39;

If you are on the fence, I%26#39;d lean towards not going. I believe a nice stroll around old city exploring some of the hidden areas is a better time well spent.

If you do, I%26#39;ve heard that the headphones are a must for the exhibit, they give a much better background to the pieces than the text.

My husband and I just got back from Philly and went to the King Tut exhibit on July 28th. We mainly went because my 8 y/o daughter LOVES anything to do with Egypt and King Tut. I had read some not so favorable reviews about ';King Tut'; and did not know what to expect. We all really enjoyed the exhibit. Definitely do the headphones as it really adds to it and moves you along. I don%26#39;t know what ';WOW factor'; people are looking for. Just to see the workmanship on the items recovered from the tomb and realize they are close to 5000 years old is something in itself. If this kind of stuff does not appeal to you you won%26#39;t enjoy it. But I must say that my older daughter who is 12 said that she enjoyed it and didn%26#39;t think she would when first told her we were going. If you are interested in this kind of thing and will not be going to Cairo soon, it%26#39;s worth taking in. We bought the ';Golden Ticket'; which gives you entry to the exhibit after 5 p.m. and includes the IMAX theater presentation for $25. I thought this was a great bargain because this is at least what you would pay to enter any museum minus the IMAX.

By the way I did hear that the Archaelogical Museum at Penn University is fantastic and is world reknowned. We did not have time to go this trip but will definitely hit this when we return.

We stayed at the Sheraton University City and would not recommend this as it was not close in proximity to the Franklin Institute. My girlfriend did King Tut a week or two before me and my family and stayed at the Windsor Suites. She was really pleased. It is quite close to the museum and all the rooms are suites with kitchens. They did not have availability on the dates we went.

I hope you enjoy your trip!!!!

I just got back from the exhibit - we went on Sat. 9/8 at 11 am., and were we disappointed!!!! My daughter loves Egypt and she was so excited. It was such a letdown because the place was absolutely packed! I was upset because the F. Institute sells a certain number of tickets, and obviously oversold, because it took forever to get into the exhibit and once there, you couldn%26#39;t see the artifacts because crowds of people blocked them! And if you were claustrophobic, you were in big trouble!!! I am very annoyed because the tickets were no cheap and we DID NOT GET OUR MONEY';S WORTH!!!! And the minute you leave the exhibit, you find yourself in the Gift Shop, which is equally packed!

If you do want to go, I would suggest the 9:00 am showing and get there first - also do not go on the weekend! The artifacts are wonderful, if you can see them!

We went to the King Tut exhibit about a month ago. Wow it was very nice, and very informative, I have to agree, there was not really a WOW moment (closest was getting a good look at the dagger found on Tut%26#39;s Mummy, incredible workmanship!)

I live in the area and had no problem picking up a ticket and driving into the city, combined with admission to the institute itself it was not a bad value. It was definately crowded, but with a little patience I had no trouble seeing everything.

If you were thinking of coming from out of town, I don%26#39;t know if the added expense is worth it unless you can add in other items to maximize your value. For example, adding in the Mummy exhibit at Upenn(?), the art museum, historical stuff, etc, I%26#39;d say it was worth it, but as far as just King Tut goes, I dunno.

Please note that exhibit is done the end of this month and ticket availability may be limited!

As far as Hotels, what is your budget, and would you consider seeing other things. That will affect my suggestions...
