My wife and I will be at the Hampton for a week in early October. My wife will be in a conference for half of the time and I will be on my own to tour the city. I will have a vehicle if needed.
I would like to see the historic sites but also should have time for other attractions. I normally like to walk through cities instead of taking tours. However, this is our first time in Philadelphia and I am open to suggestions. Is there a tour bus or trolley that allows you to get off and on through the day?
Also, are there any blues clubs in the area for night time entertainment?
Thanks in advance for your help.
First Time in the City
We really do need a website sticky like the London form has..
There is a hop-on hop off trolley or bus tour (www.phillytour.com) that will take you to all the key sights in the city.
That said, most of the historical spots, as well as the Reading Terminal Market are easily within walking distance of your hotel, the tour is useful for an orientation and getting to the further items, like the art museum and Eastern State Pen (always fun around Halloween).

Try Warmdaddy%26#39;s for Blues ~

If you make your first stop the visitor%26#39;s center, they can provide you with maps to do your own walking tour, at your own pace. They also have a audio walking tour that you can do yourself. Old City is pretty compact, so you can walk everywhere.
In the opposite direction to Old City, you can walk to the museum area from your hotel. The most of the City%26#39;s popular museums are in the general vicinity to the Art Museum.
You would need some type of transportation (public or your car) if you want to visit the Zoo, Camden Waterfront or South Philly.
Not a big blues fan, but if you like Jazz, Ortleibs is the place to go.
Thanks for the replys.
What is the best time of day to drive into the city to our hotel on a Friday?
Also, are taxis reasonable and how is the public transportation for getting around?
Thanks again for the help.
Taxis are extremely reasonable, when compared to other cities like New York for instance. Public transportation in Center City and surrounding neighbors is pretty good (not as frequent/accessible beyond that).
