Single Lady - 32 - R&B, Blues, cultural sightseeing

Hi All,

I%26#39;d like to visit Philadelphia for my fall vacation this year. I will travel by myself in October or November for 3-4 days and would like to stay in Center City.

I am drawn to Philadelphia because:

1. I love big cities for vacationing

2. A few of my favorite music artists are from there (Jill Scott)

3. It%26#39;s a cheap flight from NH

While there, I%26#39;d love to see live R%26amp;B or soul music. I like nightclubs, but would rather see a live show. Any recommendations? I am 32.

I also love museums, although not interested in family type exhibits. No interest in the aquarium.

I have read some about South St. Is it close to Center City? Is it worth the trip? I%26#39;ll be on foot or in cabs.

Is Philly the type of city where I can walk out of my center city hotel and head in a general direction and pass almost everything I%26#39;d want to see?

Oh and where do I run Rocky%26#39;s stairs? haha! I%26#39;m a runner, is it enough of a workout, or would I add it to a run?

Any help or suggestions for where I might go or have interest would be greatly appreciated!

Philly is a great city for walking. The original city, now called Center CIty, is defined by South Street to the south, Vine Street to the North, the Schuylkill Rvier to the West and the Delaware River to the East. Most of the sights that draw tourists are within this 1X2 mile area. The Art Museum is just beyond and a good run takes you past the Museum into Fairmount Park where there is a paved path along the Schuylkill River.

Museums - Philly has all sorts - art, science, history, ethnic/cultural, plus numerous historic buildings which may be toured.

You may be interested in these: The PA Academy of the Fine Arts (American Fine Art in a great building), The Atwater Kent (history of Philadelphia), Philadelphia City Hall (beaux art building covered with sculpture - tours 12:30 p.m. weekdays).

That%26#39;s a start. Please let us know your specific sight-seeing interests.

That all sounds great. What about live R%26amp;B? I searched for nightlife and found dance clubs with DJ%26#39;s and some jazz.

Take a look at warmdaddys.com

When I suggested Warmdaddy%26#39;s I was thinking Blue%26#39;s, not R%26amp;B.

Have you looked at gophila.com for R%26amp;B listings?

Lynn

There are tons of clubs/ lounges that will spin great R %26amp; B. I want to say that there is a small lounge in Olde City that does have live music though. I have to do some digging to find it.

If you are interested in hearing a dj spin, Philadelphia Weekly will give you a weekly listing of the clubs and djs ad who%26#39;s doing what...

I did look at warmdaddy last night and will probably eat there one night and catch some tunes. I also checked gophila.com for music and really didn%26#39;t find much in the way of live R%26amp;B or even blues. Mostly DJ dancing and jazz. Which is okay, but I can get that where I live and I%26#39;m hoping for more of a local flavor.

philadelphiaweekly.com is awesome! Thank you. I feel I have a lot more music options after viewing that site.

Let us know if you have any questions about a specific place.

I am planning my October trip and have been advised by several people on this site to forget about renting a car. If I want to hit some night spots like Warmdaddy%26#39;s I assume a taxi would be the best option without a car. Does anyone have an idea how much the cab fare would be from the center city to Warmdaddy%26#39;s?

Przyk asked:

';Does anyone have an idea how much the cab fare would be from the center city to Warmdaddy%26#39;s?';

Short answer: Depending where you pick up the cab, $6-$10.

Fares are $2.70 plus .30 for each 1/7 mile ($2.10/mile) plus .30 for each 54 seconds of wait time (accumulates as you go). Warmdaddy%26#39;s is at 1400 S. Delaware Avenue (Columbus Blvd). So, that%26#39;s 1.4 miles south of Market Street, and 1.4 miles east of Broad Street. So, if you take the cab from City Hall, that%26#39;s 2.8 miles. So let%26#39;s round it off to 3 miles.

$2.70 + $6.30 = $9.00

If you are at 4th %26amp; Chestnut, then that%26#39;s .5 miles (to Columbus) plus 1.3 miles (from Chestnut) = 1.8 miles, so...

$2.70 + $5.10 = $7.80

If you happen to be at 2nd %26amp; South, then the trip is about .2 plus .8, or about one mile, so...

$2.70 + $2.70 = $5.40.

Note- fares are calculated on the meter, so there could be slight variations, plus most streets are one way, so if you happen to flag a cab at the wrong spot and going the wrong way, you could wind up going up to 4 blocks out of your way ($.30-$.90 more). For tipping, I round up to the nearest $1.00, with a $1.00 minimum. So, if the fare was $7.80, I would give him $9.00. Anything over $10.00, I tip 20% unless the guy was a jerk.
